Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of voices in the world today? Everyone seems to have an opinion, a new revelation, or a “truth” they want you to believe. From social media gurus to self-proclaimed prophets, it can be hard to know who to trust. As Christians, we’re called to be discerning, to not simply accept everything we hear at face value. And thankfully, God has given us clear guidance on how to navigate this challenge.
One of the most powerful and direct instructions comes from the Apostle John in his first letter: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1, ESV).
This verse is a cornerstone for Christian discernment. Let’s break down what it means for us today.
What Does “Test the Spirits” Mean?
In John’s time, there were false teachers spreading doctrines that denied the true nature of Jesus Christ. These individuals claimed to have spiritual insight, but their teachings were dangerous and led people astray. John’s exhortation to “test the spirits” was a vital call to critically examine the source and content of any spiritual claim.
It’s not about being suspicious of everyone, but about being wise and thoughtful. The word “test” here implies a process of examination, like assaying metal to determine its purity. We are to scrutinize the message, the messenger, and the fruit of their teachings. Is it genuine? Is it from God? Or is it a deceptive imitation?
Scripture as Our Unwavering Guide
The beauty of God’s Word is its consistency and unwavering truth. When we “test the spirits,” our ultimate standard is always Scripture. Consider these supporting verses:- “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, ESV). This reminds us that the Bible is our complete and sufficient guide. Any “spirit” or teaching that contradicts Scripture cannot be from God.
- “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8, ESV). Paul’s strong words here emphasize the gravity of distorting the true Gospel. We must be on guard against any teaching that deviates from the core message of Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.
- “You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?” (Matthew 7:16, ESV). Jesus himself taught us to evaluate teachers by their “fruits.” Does their teaching lead to godliness, love, joy, peace, and other fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)? Or does it foster division, pride, or immorality?
How Can We “Test the Spirits” Today?
So, how do we apply this ancient wisdom to our modern lives? Here are some practical ways Christians can “test the spirits” in their everyday walk:
- Immerse Yourself in God’s Word: This is paramount. The more familiar you are with the true, the easier it is to spot the counterfeit. Daily Bible reading, study, and meditation will equip you to discern truth from error. When you know Jesus intimately through His Word, you’ll recognize anything that doesn’t sound like Him.
- Pray for Discernment: God promises to give wisdom to those who ask (James 1:5). Humbly seek His guidance through prayer, asking for clarity and insight to understand His will and recognize deceptive influences.
- Evaluate Teachings Against Scripture: When you hear a new idea, a sermon, a podcast, or a social media post that claims spiritual authority, ask yourself: “Does this align with the clear teachings of the Bible?” If there’s a contradiction, lean into the Word. Don’t be swayed by charismatic personalities or popular opinions if they don’t line up with God’s truth.
- Consider the Character and Fruit: Observe the lives of those who claim spiritual authority. Do their actions reflect the character of Christ? Is their teaching producing healthy, God-honoring fruit in the lives of their followers? Remember, true spiritual leadership leads people closer to Jesus, not to themselves.
- Seek Wise Counsel: Don’t go it alone. Discuss your questions and concerns with trusted, mature believers in your congregation – elders, pastors, or wise friends who are grounded in Scripture. They can offer valuable perspectives and help you process complex issues.
- Be Humble and Teachable: While we must be discerning, we also need to maintain a humble posture, open to correction and growth. Sometimes, the “spirit” we need to test is our own biases or preconceived notions.
In a world full of noise and competing voices, “testing the spirits” is not just a suggestion; it’s a vital command for every believer. It’s an act of love for God and for others, protecting ourselves and our fellow Christians from error.
