The 23rd Psalm
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
What a Wonderful Passage
This was my mother’s favorite passage and mine as well as I was growing up. Verse 2 reminds me of being at my grandparents’ house on the Neches River. All of us cousins would go to sleep at night listening to the quiet, gentle sounds of the river slowly rolling by. Maybe a fish breaking the top of the water or gentle waves splashing the edge of the riverbank. Great times.
So Much More
The passage is sooooo much more than that. Just read it and pay attention to the words. What more could we want? We belong to HIM. He provides for our every need. When we are fearful or anxious, he is there to comfort us. When this life is done, we will dwell in his house forever.
How could one read this passage and not know peace. The kind of peace that can only come from a relationship with the one and only true God.
