The following article was first published in the Baker Heights bulletin in 1970 by former minister John Shero.
Labors of Love
There are many labors of love which exist in our world today. None of them quite measure up to that of the dedicated eldership which commit themselves to the gentle shepherding of the flock.
Because they are concerned, they want to know when sickness and problems touch the lives of their people. The hiring of a preacher and directing dynamic education programs is but a small part of their tremendous task. Hebrews 13:17 outlines well the personal concern which is felt for every precious soul. “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit to them: for they watch in behalf of your souls, as they shall give an account; that they may do this with joy, and not with grief: for this were unprofitable for you.”
Registration Cards. A Blessing?
Thus, after much prayer and consideration, it was determined that the registration cards would be used at each service, thus rendering a two-fold blessing:
- In this way the elders will be aware of not only who is present but also every person, who for any reason, was not able to attend.
- A far greater number of visitor cards are thus turned in. This system is not a move toward “computerized religion”. In fact, the very opposite is true. God is concerned with every soul, particularly those who are weak and may have stumbled. Let’s help our elders as they concentrate not only on the ninety and nine, but especially on the one lost sheep.
The few moments’ time it takes to sign a card is such a small price to encourage the elders in their great work. Let’s all co-operate so that they “may do it with joy, and not with grief.”

BHCC Minister -1964 – 1972
Although we are not currently beginning a ministry of asking members and visitors to fill out a card, the point of the article remains true today. As the elders continue to shepherd the flock, it is immensely beneficial for them to have a record of everyone’s attendance, and so members and visitors alike are encouraged to register using the QR codes provided, or members and visitors can fill out a card or members can check in using Elexio.
