Schoolboys on the playground often draw lines challenging each other to tell whose side they are on by crossing the line. Jesus once drew a similar line in the sand, saying, “Whosoever is not with me is against me” (Matthew 12:30). Then he begs us to cross over to his side. What does it mean to be on his side?
Loyalty
First, by crossing his line we show loyalty. We show our desire to ally with him, our intent to serve him, and our longing to be his brother. By refusing to obey, we proclaim our loyalty to the devil. People don’t have to draw pentagrams and sacrifice animals to serve Satan. It only takes doing nothing (1 John 3:10).
Submission
Second, when we obey God and cross his line, we show submission. By obeying his will, we acknowledge his right to set the rules (Romans 6:16-18; Matthew 28:18; 1 Corinthians 15:27). Rebellion toward obedience is rebellion to God’s authority. When we follow men, the masses, or even our own instincts, we condemn ourselves (Proverbs 14:12; Jeremiah 10:23). Refusing to cross that line challenges the power and authority of the Creator (Romans 9:20f).
Valor
Finally, by crossing God’s line, we show valor. God has not promised a life of ease and peace from the world. In fact, the world hates those who cross his line (John 15:18-19). The world ridicules those obedient to God (2 Timothy 3:12; 1 Peter 4:4). But, for those brave enough to cross over to God’s side, blessings and life await (Matthew 5:12; Ephesians 1:3). Cowardice dwells in those who do not obey because God’s ways are too demanding. Others fear the attacks and persecution associated with being a Christian. But those who cross the line demonstrate valor and bravery.
At the cross, Jesus drew an eternal line in the sand, and only those loyal, meek, and brave enough have crossed it. Have you?
