A Refreshing Summer

Do you remember mowing Mr. Bright’s yard? Each week you’d cut two acres of grass with a 22” Murray push mower while being told to “take only half a cut” per round and after a couple of hours under the sweltering sun you were more eager to get the glass of ice water than the money he paid. Remember how that glass of water revitalized you as you stood in front of his old metal oscillating fan and held that crumpled ten-dollar bill? Do you remember summer workouts for band, baseball, or football? When the heat seemed unbearable, and you thought there would never be anymore happiness in the world until Coach said, “Get a drink!”? Or do you remember the last time you crossed Death Valley, battling the sun to retain just a single ounce of moisture so you could live to see the other side? Then finishing the trek and receiving a tall glass of cool water, and the refreshment it brought as you poured it past your parched lips scaled with flaking skin? Refreshment. It’s the joy of the human condition. When the body gets hot and dehydrated, there is nothing so wondrously simple and magically restorative than a single glass of cold water—except maybe two glasses.

Staying Healthy

If the body needs water to stay healthy, then the spirit needs the Bible to stay healthy. The word of God infuses our spirit with knowledge and wisdom to help us make the right decisions (James 1:5). It adds strength to aid us in carrying out those decisions (Rom 16:25). It bolsters our faith to keep us on track with those decisions (Rom 10:17). It opens our spirits to receive the indwelling of God (John 14:23). The preaching of the Word truly refreshes the soul.

Thirsting for Rehydration

Each day our souls take a hike through a spiritual Death Valley. We are surrounded by people who reject God on his terms and stand in the fires of hell. Either they don’t believe in him, or they believe in a man-made substitute for him that demands nothing and accepts everything. As a result, the world assaults Christians with immodesty, profanity, lies, and many sins and temptations. The situation is dire as spirituality and righteousness sweat from our souls, drying our resolve, and leaving our spirits thirsting for rehydration from God. In his word, we find refreshment.

Many people never realize how important water is to their body and get dehydrated while working or playing in the sun. Sometimes with tragic consequences. Likewise, the soul often gets neglected, not getting refreshed by the word. Don’t become a victim of spiritual dehydration.
