To Serve or To Be Served

The following article was first published in the Baker Heights bulletin in 1986 by former minister Stan Reid.

Jesus said that he did not come to be served, but to serve. The gospel accounts reveal that his lifestyle was unified with the message. God had created a ministry or work for him. Likewise, Christians are to follow in the steps of Jesus and seek to serve rather than be served. Paul wrote:

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:8-11).

It is so easy to see all the work which needs to be done and become so overwhelmed that we do nothing. In those times we need to be reminded that we are not in this alone. The Corinthians were told that while Paul planted, Apollos watered, and God gave the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6,7). We are partners with God and with one another. The work we are to be doing is God’s. Jesus has shown the focal point of that work. He focused his attention upon people who needed the Kingdom of God. That is where our focus is to be, also. We are partners in the greatest work on earth. Let’s live up to such a high calling!
