New Songs

The following article was first published in the Baker Heights bulletin in 1997 by former minister Jack English.

I have really enjoyed singing from our new song books the last few weeks. Jason West, Scott McGaha, and others are to be commended for introducing us to some of the new songs that may be new to many of us. Many of them are not new at all but have been around for several years and are often sung in praise and worship by our people and others.

There are other songs that are only new because they are so old that many young people have not heard of them (including me). Singing new songs is spiritually healthy and faith building. Research has proven that after a person has heard a song ten times, you no longer listen to the words. We have certainly sung many of our hymn’s hundreds of times.

Have you ever noticed how much closer you pay attention to the words of a new song? Maybe that is why David was so excited when he wrote the Psalm that said, “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.” Psalm 40:3.

So let us continue to learn and sing new songs that our Lord will be glorified!
