I have talked to a lot of people the last couple of days that have been shaken about the state of our country, economy, and their own personal future. When we think about the future it can be scary because it is unknown. We don’t know if things will get better or take a turn for the worse. It brought to my mind a story I have shared before of a father and son who were walking home through the woods one night after spending all day in town. They had not planned on being out so late and only had a small lantern to light their path on the way home. Since the light only shone for a few feet in front of them, the boy was afraid and asked the father if they could turn back. The father looked down and said, “Here, son, you take the lantern, and we will just go as far as the light goes in front of us.” Since the boy was holding the light, as he moved forward so did the light on the path. So, little by little, their path was lit for them the whole way home.
It’s not always so different with our Christian faith. We may not know what the next year, month, or even the next day may bring, but if we walk by faith in the path God reveals for us, we will make it home with Him in Heaven. We don’t know what God’s plan for us tomorrow or 10 years from now may be. But today, choose to follow Him for every step revealed before us and tomorrow will take care of itself.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:33-34).
