During any campaign season, ads full of words like “honesty” and “integrity” inundate the airwaves. We are wary about car salesmen who promise a “fair” deal. Our skepticism goes back to the proverb, “If a man tells you he’s honest, he’s probably not,” and its near kinsman, “If a man tells you to trust him, don’t.”
People want to see it.
Experience shows there is some truth behind these proverbs. Honesty is not something that people want to hear about, rather, it is something they want to see. Too many people to claim to be honest and turn around and conduct shady business dealings or to withhold some truth in order to benefit themselves. Honesty is a personal character trait that shines in those who have it. They do not need to tell you they are honest—they show it.
A life worthy of the gospel of Christ
Similarly, Christians shouldn’t have to tell others they follow Christ. If a man tells you he’s a Christian, he’s probably not. Christianity is a way of life, not a way of lip. Paul said, “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ” (Phil 1:27). If we live by the pattern of the gospel, then there will be no need to tell the world we are Christians; or to wear it on a T-shirt; or to paint it on a sign. If we are living Christ, the world will know.
Of course, when asked about our behavior or beliefs, then we can say it is Christ’s influence or that we are Christians. However, those questions will not come if we are not first identified by our example.
Camouflage to blend in with the world
Many disciples have to tell others they are Christians. Like hardcore hunters, they camouflage their lifestyle to blend in with the world around them, so nobody sees them acting like Christ. A far cry from Christ’s expectation, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matt 5:16).
Like honesty, Christianity is something that should be seen, not heard. If we have to tell them we are Christians, maybe we should scrutinize who we really are.
