Why is God one of the most confusing topics in the church? God made humanity his image bearers (Gen 1:26-27). When humanity fell, God made provisions to save him by sacrificing himself (Gen 3:15; 1 Pet 1:20). After Jesus left, he sent the Spirit of God into the hearts of believers (Acts 2:38; Eph 1:13-14). God shared himself so intimately with his humankind, it is baffling there is confusion about the divine.
Contradictory Ideas
Yet when people talk about the Holy Spirit, they often admit they do not understand him. Or they say the Holy Spirit is so confusing. Perhaps a lot of the confusion stems from so many contradictory ideas about the Spirit. Is he active and working today, or was it just for the first century? Does the Spirit still perform miracles, or has he ceased doing them? Is the Spirit just the manifestation of the Father in another form, or is he distinct from the father? What about resisting the Spirit or blaspheming the Spirit? These are important questions, and the bible answers them.
Focus on the Holy Spirit
During the month of March, the Baker Heights Power of One series will focus on the Holy Spirit. On the first Sunday, the lesson will focus on the divine personhood of the Spirit. The second Sunday will examine Peter’s promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:38. The third Sunday will focus on the regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit from Titus 3:5-7. On the fourth Sunday, the sermon will address quenching, resisting, and grieving the Spirit. The final Sunday will look at the strengthening of the Spirit in Ephesians 3:16. Obviously, these lessons will not answer every question about the Spirit, but it should build a good foundation for Christians to be confident and conversant about this subject.
I hope you can be here each week, and that you gain a deeper appreciation for the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.
